
Christopher J. Ailman
Mr. Ailman is the Chief Investment Officer for CalSTRS, leading a team of five
directors and a support staff of 70 employees. He oversees five divisions within Investments:
Alternative Investments, External Equities/Corporate Governance and Operations, Fixed Income,
Internal Equities, and Real Estate.
Mr. Ailman joined CalSTRS in the fall of 2000, bringing with him more than 20 years of institutional
investment management experience. Immediately prior to joining CalSTRS, Mr. Ailman managed the
$60 billion Washington State Investment Board, where he led the development of a new investment
program for a hybrid Defined Benefit/Defined Contribution plan. He also served as CIO of the
Sacramento Employees Retirement System and the County of Sacramento.
In 2000, Mr. Ailman was named Chief Investment Officer of the year by the Institute for Fiduciary
Education. In 2003, he was awarded the Richard L Stoddard Award by his peers (other state CIOs)
for his outstanding contributions to the investment of public funds.
Mr. Ailman earned a bachelor's degree in Business Economics from the University of California,
Santa Barbara, and was certified as a Certified Financial Planner by the University of Southern
California. He is married with three daughters and is a committed Promise Keeper.
