Brian J. Bartow
As General Counsel, Brian Bartow is the primary legal adviser to the Teachers’ Retirement Board and heads the fund’s legal
services team, as well as its compliance, community property and information security services.
Mr. Bartow has been with CalSTRS since 2008, first as Assistant General Counsel and then as Acting General Counsel. Before that,
he was Assistant Chief Counsel for the Department of Social Services. He has also held high-level legal positions at the California
Department of Managed Health Care and the California Department of Corporations.
Mr. Bartow received his Juris Doctorate from University of California, Davis in 1989 and was admitted to the California Bar the
same year. He began his legal career in private practice representing health care providers in complex transactions and litigation.
He also represented major corporate clients and gained substantial experience in corporate, partnership and business law.
Mr. Bartow holds a bachelor’s degree in history from UC Riverside and an associate’s degree in nursing from Queensborough Community
College. He is a veteran of the United States Army Military Police.
Mr. Bartow and his wife Nancey have been married 28 years and have three children and two dogs.
