Rising above the confluence of the Sacramento and American rivers, the new headquarters for
CalSTRS embodies our core values and serves as a tribute to our members. Honoring the spirit
of our mission, this new facility evokes a vessel steering a course of financial strength and stability.
Our future is directly addressed through a design that creatively serves as a national model for
environmental sustainability and energy efficiency while making a meaningful addition to the
surrounding community.
The facility is composed of four program elements: an administrative tower, a five-level parking
structure for approximately 1,000 cars, a public function area, and a tree-filled park which connects the neighboring
community with the waterfront promenade and river.
The 400,000 square foot structure is a 13-story office tower on two levels of public space.
Its design features a gently curved façade. The base levels of the
building contain the lobby, dining facility, training and customer service areas, and the board room.
These areas overlook the park and open onto the river promenade. The multi-story lobby creates a
dramatic focal point for pedestrians and vehicles approaching via the tree lined entry promenade.
The building's design incorporates high performance building systems, water conservation measures, energy
efficient glazing designed to maximize access to daylight and an orientation on the lot to minimize
direct solar penetration into the building while offering CalSTRS employees and visitors dramatic
views of the region beyond.
Consolidating all office functions into one quality facility such as this one creates an inviting,
invigorating space that will provide a far more effective, collaborative team-oriented work
environment for current and future employees.
