In mid-October, the federal Health and Human Services announced that Medicare premiums will be increasing effective January 1, 2008. Below is a table that shows 2007 and 2008 premiums.

If members are having their Medicare Part B premiums deducted from their retirement allowances, the new premiums will be reflected in the allowance check they receive on or about January 1, 2008, because the premiums are paid prospectively. Some members may be assessed a Medicare Part B surcharge or an Income Related Adjustment Amount which will be deducted from their checks. Therefore, the amount of their Medicare Part B payment will be higher than the premium noted below.

  Through     December 31, 2007 Beginning     January 1, 2008
Medicare Part B $93.50/month $96.40/month
Medicare Part A $410/month $423/month
Medicare Part A with
30 to 39 Medicare credits
$226/month $233/month
Covered employment required to earn one Medicare credit (maximum of 4 credits per year) $1,000
(or $4,000/year)
$1,050
(or $4,200/year)
