As an April 2007 California State University, Sacramento, study shows,
CalSTRS payments to California beneficiaries are a powerful economic engine in each of the state’s 58 counties
as well as statewide — building wealth, creating jobs and producing a healthy return for state
and local governments.
Economic benefits from CalSTRS payments include:
- Total economic output of $9.23 billion arising from 2006 California benefit payments of nearly $6.03 billion.
- Taxpayer return on every dollar invested in CalSTRS of $6.71 to the local economy and $0.44 to local and state government.
- Local and state government revenue totaling $606.96 million generated by CalSTRS payments.
- $4.49 billion in added value, $2.11 billion in employee compensation and 61,000 jobs added to the state’s economy from CalSTRS payment-generated business activity.
- Greater benefit to small, rural mountain counties relative to their overall economic output.
