Public school teachers do not pay into Social Security for CalSTRS-covered employment,
so they aren't entitled to receive Social Security for that service. For many, CalSTRS
is their sole source of retirement income.
It's important for members to know that and plan for it by participating in
supplemental savings plans, such as the new Pension2
personal wealth program recently launched by CalSTRS.
A Social Security policy report was released by CalSTRS on November 1 and is being presented
to the Governor's Public Employee Post-Employment Benefits Commission.
