As a retired government employee not covered by Social Security, you may be eligible for a
one-time tax credit of $250 when you file your 2009 federal tax return.
The government retiree tax credit is "refundable" - that is, you get the credit even if you owe no income tax. The
credit is $500 for married couples
filing jointly when both spouses qualify.
The tax credit, part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009,
is for certain government retirees who do not receive the following benefits:
- Social Security
- Railroad retirement
- Veteran's disability or pension benefits
