Legislative Updates Consistent with our mission, CalSTRS advocates in the legislative arena to ensure continued retirement security for the state’s educators. The bills below are pending before the Legislature. Positions taken by the Teachers’ Retirement Board are noted in italics at the end of each bill summary. Assembly Bill 789 (Mullin) Protects retirees’ purchasing power by increasing the state General Fund appropriation to the Supplemental Benefit Maintenance Account for four years to offset a reduced appropriation in 2003-04. Pending. Assembly Joint Resolution 5 (Hernandez) Supports current and future CalSTRS retirees by asking the President and Congress to repeal the Social Security Act’s Government Pension Offset and Windfall Elimination Provision. Support. Senate Bill 901 (Padilla) Promotes post-retirement employment by extending earnings limitation exemptions in current law through June 30, 2009. Sponsor.
