Medicare Premiums Increased January 1, 2007

In mid-September, the federal Department of Health and Human Services announced that Medicare premiums would be increasing effective January 1, 2007.

Medicare Part A Premium is now $410
Medicare Part A Premium surcharge is now $41
Medicare Part A deductible is now $992

If you have the Medicare Part B premium and/or surcharges deducted from your retirement benefit, the new premium was reflected on the check you received around January 1, 2007. This is because the premiums are paid for each month ahead of time.

As required in the Medicare Modernization Act, beginning in 2007, single beneficiaries with annual incomes over $80,000 and married couples with incomes over $160,000 will pay a higher percentage of the cost of Medicare Part B coverage, reducing Medicare’s share. These adjustments and premium amounts are listed in the chart below.
