Three of the 12 Teachers’ Retirement Board members will be elected by the active CalSTRS membership this year. Nominations will be accepted through May 18, 2007, and elections will be held from October 1 to November 30, 2007.

The Candidates

A K–12 (non-administrator). A candidate must be employed by a school district or county office of education and be an active Defined Benefit Program member or Cash Balance Benefit Program participant. This person cannot be an administrator.

A K–12 (inclusive). A candidate must be employed by a school district or county office of education and be an active CalSTRS Defined Benefit Program member or Cash Balance Benefit participant. This person may be an administrator.

Community College. A candidate must be an instructor employed by a community college district and an active Defined Benefit Program member or Cash Balance Benefit Program participant.

Nomination Packets

Nomination packets include a petition form, nomination certification form and the election rules and procedures. Nominations are made on the petition forms, and the candidate must collect the signatures of at least 250 active members or participants.

The Election

CalSTRS will mail a ballot to the homes of all active CalSTRS Defined Benefit members and Cash Balance Benefit participants on October 1. Members and participants have until December 1 to return the ballot to CalSTRS.

Board Members’ Responsibilities

The Teachers’ Retirement Board members set policy and make rules for CalSTRS and are responsible for ensuring that benefits are paid by CalSTRS in accordance with law. The board appoints a Chief Executive Officer who is responsible for the administration of the System according to the Board’s policies and rules. The board also appoints a Chief Investment Officer who is responsible for the investment of the Teachers’ Retirement Fund, in keeping with board policy. The board has seven standing committees: Appeals, Audits and Risk Management, Benefits and Services, Board Governance, Executive Compensation, Investments (a committee of the whole), and Legislative.
