Can a teacher retire at age 50 with 25 years of service credit but defer pension payments until age 60-62?

Ask Jack Jack Ehnes

You are not required to begin to receive a retirement benefit once you stop working in a CalSTRS-covered position; you can leave your money in CalSTRS until you reach age 70 ½ or request a refund. You are officially retired as of the date you request on your Service Retirement Application.

Be sure to consider the advantages and disadvantages of selecting your preretirement option as soon as possible. If you do not make a preretirement election of an option and die before retirement, the monthly benefit paid to your beneficiaries will be impacted. Members should also check with their employer as eligibility for health benefits may be impacted if the member does not begin to receive retirement benefits within a certain time period after ceasing work.
