Is there a possibility that the formula for calculating CalSTRS Defined Benefit will change?

Ask Jack Jack Ehnes

The benefit formula for current and retired members is set by state law.

Efforts to reduce public pensions for future public employees have been under discussion in some circles. But those changes are aimed at future benefits for the next generation of public employees, those not yet hired. One proposed change is that future members calculate their retirement benefits with a different formula than the formula set for current active and retired members. At this point, however, no proposals have been introduced in the Legislature that affect either future or current CalSTRS members.
