CalSTRS Portfolio Manager Solange Fernández Brooks Recognized for Finance Leadership

What's New

Solange Fernández Brooks, a portfolio manager with CalSTRS investments was recently in the spotlight in Latino Leaders magazine.

Solange Fernández Brooks manages a billion dollar ‘proactive portfolio’ of private equity funds run by emerging domestic managers. As a portfolio manager in the Investment Executive Unit, she reports directly to the Chief Investment Officer of the giant investment fund CalSTRS (the California State Teachers’ Retirement System).

Growing up in a bilingual world, Solange was told that she could accomplish anything she set her mind to. She embarked on a career in the U.S. Air Force and advanced from enlisted to officer status. After leaving the military, she gained private sector experience in the lending industry and public sector experience working for the Office of the Governor as well as the Office of the Inspector General of California.

In the meantime, she also earned her MBA from California State University in Sacramento. In 2004, she came back to her roots in state government to focus on new diverse investment opportunities for CalSTRS. Solange’s top three leadership principles are vision (especially a Latino vision), creativity (thinking differently than the rest), and having an ‘indestructible’ attitude.
